No Need to be Embarrassed

July 19, 2017 in Educate Yourself

According to the Anxiety and Depression Association of America anxiety disorders are the most common form of mental illness in America.  The condition affects 40 million adults in the United States.  That’s 18 percent of the U.S. population!!

From: The Mighty.com

However, despite this, people with anxiety disorders still live with the stigma that is often associated with invisible conditions.  The Mighty asked their readers what living with Anxiety was like, and how they tackled living with it.  It is important for you to know that you are not alone in this journey and you are not isolated. One of the reasons we have the SOVA website is to connect you with a supportive community and resources to help you with your journey.

Tell us, did any of the quotes in the article resonate with you?  What do you want people in your life to understand about your mental illness?

The 5 Signs

July 12, 2017 in Educate Yourself

The five signs of suffering are:

  • withdrawal
  • agitation
  • hopelessness
  • a decline in personal care
  • a change in personality.

Someone may exhibit one or more signs when they are suffering.

Perhaps you’ve experienced these yourself or have noticed these in a friend or relative. Suffering can come to us in many ways – perhaps a close friend or relative has moved away or died, or perhaps your own mental illness makes life difficult on a day-to-day basis. Being aware of these 5 signs can be a helpful way to realize when you need to seek help or if you should ask a friend if they need help.

The Campaign to Change Direction is a national organization working to reduce stigma and educate people about mental health, mental illness, and wellness. They are hoping to create a movement around compassionate interactions with each other.

Have you experienced these symptoms? Does it help to know that you are not alone? That your symptoms can be addressed?

Social Media Image

July 6, 2017 in Social Media Guide

One thing that can be really tough when you have a mental illness is feeling like you are less than. Especially when you see stuff stuff on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and the like.  It can be hard to feel like you’ve made any progress toward a healthier you when it seems like everyone on social media is on vacation, or cooking like a pro, or having a blast with all their friends.

One thing to keep in mind is that you can only compare your progress and your health to yourself.  Your story and processes are unique to you and it’s important to be mindful that most people are posting things that make them look good on social media.

What are some ways that you cope with the idea of the “perfect” image? What helps you remember that everyone is human, and everyone struggles? What makes you feel less alone?

What is Depression?

June 28, 2017 in Educate Yourself

2326420_fcbdad1745_oDepression can be a confusing illness. We often think having an illness means you have a runny nose, a stomach ache, or some part of your body is in pain. Usually you take some medicine, rest, and hopefully in a few days or less you are back to feeling yourself. However, depression may take time to evolve, and takes more time to recover from. This is because depression involves brain changes and sometimes those can take longer to repair.

Having depression means you have 5 or more of these symptoms for at least 2 weeks straight (list from webMD):

  • A depressed mood during most of the day, particularly in the morning
  • Fatigue or loss of energy almost every day
  • Feelings of worthlessness or guilt almost every day
  • Impaired concentration, indecisiveness
  • Insomnia (an inability to sleep) or hypersomnia (excessive sleeping) almost every day
  • Markedly diminished interest or pleasure in almost all activities nearly every day
  • Recurring thoughts of death or suicide (not just fearing death)
  • A sense of restlessness or being slowed down
  • Significant weight loss or weight gain

Depression can also show up as physical pain as well. Muscle soreness, aches, and pains within your body can be side effects of your brain not functioning normally.

What about you? If you have symptoms of depression, how has it affected your life? Is there a physical aspect to your depression? Tell us about it, share your story. Remember, it’s anonymous!

Self-Care: Taking Care of YOU!

June 20, 2017 in Educate Yourself

Self careSometimes the hardest thing to do when coping with an illness is to take care of yourself. Or as many call it “Self-Care.”

Self care is not about indulgence, it’s about self-preservation – Audrey Lorde

Defining what self-care means is a personal journey. Sometimes self-care may look like a long hot bath, other times it may mean taking a long walk, playing a sport, painting, doing yoga, or journaling. Taking time to discover what helps you get through the tough times and difficult moments is an major part of the journey to living well. Taking care of yourself is essential because it allows you to clear your mind, rest, and be able to take on life!

It is important to remember that not everybody’s self-care strategies will be the same!

Sometimes people feel really alone, that they need to get everything done, or care for everyone else’s needs before their own. This isn’t healthy. Taking time to rejuvenate and being honest with yourself about what you can and cannot accomplish are key in becoming a healthier person.
