It can be easy to put on music that matches your mood when you’re not feeling your best. The best way to describe it is by thinking of the phrase “misery loves company,” or that having something (or someone) that feels just as bad as you are makes you feel slightly less alone. Every now and then, we just want songs to wallow in that we can relate to, whether it be about heartbreak, loneliness, sadness, or a combination of all three, or anything else on top of that.

We listen to music all day, everyday. If we are in the car, at the dentist office, at the store, we constantly are being exposed to music. But, do you really think about the effect that music can take on our brains and our mood even when we don’t think about it?

Recently, I’ve felt pretty bogged down by life. I’ve been crazy busy with school and work and extracurriculars and sometimes it feels like I’m simply drowning in to-dos. It felt like I was in a rut where I would go through my daily routine without enjoying it or having any time to myself. Of course journaling helped a little, but I eventually turned to what has never failed me when I’m down: music.

Finding Motivation For Your Passions

The past few months, I haven’t given any time to writing music, which is something I used to be very passionate about. Music used to be a big coping mechanism for me for dealing with my anxiety. Any negative emotions I felt could easily be expressed through writing a song.
