The Science of Happiness

March 14, 2016 in Be Positive

Dan Gilbert, author of “Stumbling on Happiness,” challenges the idea that we’ll be miserable if we don’t get what we want. Our “psychological immune system” lets us feel truly happy even when things don’t go as planned.

Did you find the science to be surprising?  What did or did not challenge your assumptions about happiness?

Being Prepared for a Doctor’s Office Visit

March 8, 2016 in LINKS

The US Department of Health and Human Services has an Office of Adolescent Health that currently has a Think, Act, Grow program.

From US Department of Human Services

One of the links they provide is for how to prepare for Doctor’s Office Visits. They have one for ages 11-14 and one for ages 15-17. These are neat resource guides to prepare yourself for when you have a check up or if you have a specialist visit. Having a list of questions ahead of time and knowing what to expect can take away a lot of anxiety surrounding office visits.

Do you like having a list of questions and what to expect when going to the doctor’s office? Tell us if this resource was helpful for you!

Let your light shine

It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, ‘Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous?’ Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won’t feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine, as children do. We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It’s not just in some of us; it’s in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.”

Photos of an Anxiety Disorder

February 16, 2016 in Educate Yourself

We recently found this article called “12 Breathtaking Photos Show What It’s Really Like To Have General Anxiety Disorder” and we think it’s amazing that someone so beautifully created art around how an anxiety disorder feels. From the article: “Trying to explain a mental illness to someone who’s never experienced it is like trying to explain color to a blind person,” said photographer Katie Crawford. Crawford has battled an anxiety disorder since age 11, so she picked up her camera and developed a breathtaking series of self-portraits, titled “My Anxious Heart.”

Tell us what you think? Did any of the images resonate with you? What do you think about the comments others posted underneath the article? Do you have any questions about their discussion?

Do what makes you Happy!

“Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn’t do than by the ones you did. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.” – Mark Twain

Talking about Depression

February 9, 2016 in Educate Yourself

It can be really hard to start a conversation about depression with someone you care about. Because depression doesn’t show up as a physical illness like a chest cold or a stomach bug it can be hard to describe what you are going through. Having a starting point to talk about depression is a great way to begin the conversation.

In a prior post, we talked about what depression is and how it may present itself to you. That list may be a great place to start talking to your parents about what is happening. If you are having symptoms try saying something like “This has been going on for a (however long) and I think I need some help with it.” If you are worried about being judged or given advice you could say “I just need someone to listen right now, I don’t need advice, just a caring ear.”

What are your suggestions for someone who is having trouble raising a difficult topic? How can they start the conversation?

Positive Psychology

February 8, 2016 in Be Positive

Martin Seligman talks about psychology — as a field of study and as it works one-on-one with each patient and each practitioner. As it moves beyond a focus on disease, what can modern psychology help us to become?

Have you talked about Positive Psychology with your therapist? With your parents? What was their response? What was yours?
