Benefits of Eucalyptus

December 18, 2023 in Educate Yourself

As someone who has anxious moments, I’ve found that different scents are very calming to me such as lavender, peppermint, and eucalyptus. I’ve been aware of lavender’s calming benefits for a while, but have more recently discovered how much eucalyptus has relaxed me. I get more tired and cozy when I burn a eucalyptus candle at night, or if I add a few drops of eucalyptus oil into my humidifier at night before heading to bed to sleep. I also just put some eucalyptus in my shower and look forward to the beneficial effects it can have!

So what are the benefits of this plant? Eucalyptus can help with colds and respiratory illnesses but serving as a decongestant. It’s also been shown that eucalyptus has antibacterial and antimicrobial properties, which can fight bacterial and prevent tooth decay. Additionally, eucalyptus is an eco-friendly insect repellent. Also, eucalyptus has been researched to discover it helps stimulate the immune system, specifically oil from the plant. It’s been found to be helpful when combating arthritis, diabetes, fever, cold sores, wounds and burns, and a stuffy nose, among other things.

Do be wary of possible side effects; don’t take eucalyptus oil, such as from an essential oil bottle, orally since it is indeed poisonous. Consumption of the oil can result in diarrhea, upset stomach, nausea, and vomiting. That being said, breathing in eucalyptus should bring no harm to you, as well as if you use it topically, such as in a lotion or hand sanitizer. Further, eucalyptus leaves specifically are safe and can be used to make tea; they are a great source of antioxidants.

Overall, eucalyptus is relaxing for many and can lower blood pressure and reduce stress. This is why eucalyptus is commonly hung in the shower. The steam of the shower releases some of the oils and allows you to inhale them. Benefits of this include reduction in inflammation, boosting energy levels, and promote focus and concentration. Fresh eucalyptus can be bought at your local Trader Joe’s, and fresh bundles last 2-4 weeks in your shower (make sure to watch for any mold).

Have you ever used eucalyptus in any products or have you ever tried using it in your shower? Did you find it to be beneficial? What change with yourself did you notice, if any?

The Nap Ministry

November 18, 2022 in LINKS

On October 13th, 2022 I stumbled across a post from The New York Times about “The Nap Bishop.” When in college, The Nap Ministry founder Tricia Hershey was constantly busy working, studying, taking care of her son, and was completely exhausted. Her overall health suffered and so did her grades. Often when she was reading for class on the couch, she would rest for just a few moments and feel much better. Just a few minutes helped her feel refreshed. This led her to napping and resting more whenever she found a spare moment. With this she also integrated other restful exercises such as taking a long bath or meditating on her train ride to and from campus.

She’s now 48 and continually encourages people to take time to rest by both sleeping and daydreaming. By dedicating extra work time to rest time, people better take care of themselves and avoid burnout. Hershey has 503k followers on Instagram and has published a book about how “rest is resistance.”

This article really resonated with me, especially as a student. There is always too much work and never enough time to do it. I’m not perfect, but I have gotten better at prioritizing sleep, taking breaks, and napping when needed. I journal at least once a week and love to color in my coloring book. Whenever I need to slow down more, I will take a bath with some lavender epsom salts. I never work when I’m eating and I make sure to always give myself a couple of hours of wind down time before heading to sleep rather than work until the moment my head hits the pillow. I didn’t used to practice these different things, but now that I do, I find myself more rested, rejuvenated, and do better work outside of my resting.

Not a Fan of Cloudy Weather? Reframing Your Mindset.

September 26, 2022 in Be Positive

I grew up in a very sunny area and now live somewhere where it’s cloudy and rains frequently. My mood definitely shifts, especially when it gets cold and gloomy, my energy decreases, and it’s just harder to get things done. I’ve tried a lot of different things are here are the ones that have been most effective.

A light box. I was skeptical at first, but a light box has been super helpful for getting me some much needed light despite the ongoing cloud cover outside. By replicating natural daylight, I can definitely see improvements in my energy levels and ability to concentrate.

Generally getting comfortable. If you don’t like the cloudy and rainy weather that much, really try to do the things that make you cozy. Some people really love to bake in the cooler weather. Put on your favorite sweats and fuzzy socks. I personally love socks that are cotton wool blends because they keep my feet warmer. Light a candle. Take a bath with some Epsom salts or pop in a bath bomb.

One more thing that always helps me is having things to look forward to. If motivation is an issue, reward yourself with your favorite cup of warm tea when you finish an assignment or task. If the weather has been bleak the last week, maybe try looking at next week’s forecast and seeing if better weather is on the horizon. Maybe get some tickets to your favorite band that’s on tour or plan a fun activity indoors (e.g., an escape room or arcade) or outdoors (e.g., a trip to the zoo or mini golfing), if weather permits.

It might still be tough to feel better when it’s not your favorite weather, but hopefully these tips can help bring some comfort.

My Mental Health is Getting Worse, What Can I do About it?

September 6, 2022 in Educate Yourself

I’ve gone through a lot of ups and downs with my mental health, and have been coping with depression and anxiety for about a decade now. In the last month, I’ve noticed a big decline in my mental health and am trying to make my way back uphill to a place where I have routine and mental wellness.

So far I’ve been trying to slowly rebuild my sleep schedule (I’ve been oversleeping) by not drinking too much caffeine or drinking caffeine late in the day, going to bed at a consistent time, and not snoozing my alarm. I’m also getting back into my gym routine since exercise is a huge de-stressor for me. I’ve been staying connected with friends, making sure to text and check in with people and let them know how I’m honestly doing. I’ve gotten back into a routine where I journal every day, meal prep and cook for myself, and go for walks with my dog at the same time each day.

I’m a student so I also have schoolwork to accomplish. I’ve been really overwhelmed by all the tasks on my to do list, so I’ve sat down and broken down the large daunting tasks into smaller and more manageable ones.

Some days are still hard, and I remind myself it’s okay that I don’t check everything off that list today. On those days I remember to stay hydrated, take a bath, go for a walk outside, and trust that it’s just a bad day and not every day will be bad. I try to remember things I have to look forward to like an upcoming trip, concert, or hang out with friends.

We all have seasons when our mental health can take a turn for the worse, but it’s just a season and it will pass.

Balancing Commitments and Mental Health

June 28, 2022 in Educate Yourself

I’m a college student, a dog parent, and I work, so there’s a lot that has to get done in a short period of time. Days and weeks sometimes fly by and it’s hard to prioritize mental health with everything going on. I’ve learned that my best doesn’t look the same every week and my productivity isn’t always the same day to day either.

I’ve learned to really only commit to things I know that I have time for and am genuinely passionate about. I’ve learned how to ask for help more if I really need it. I’ve learned how to slow down more rather than push through until I burn out. This isn’t a one-size-fits-all, it takes time to really figure it out.

Regarding my mental health, I’ve been able to figure out what works for me and isn’t crazy expensive or a huge time commitment. I prioritize sleep, cook from home as much as I can, and block out an hour every week to journal and color in my coloring book. These little things really help me reset.

Balance looks different for everyone. How do you balance your commitments and also take care of yourself?
