Benefits of Eucalyptus

As someone who has anxious moments, I’ve found that different scents are very calming to me such as lavender, peppermint, and eucalyptus. I’ve been aware of lavender’s calming benefits for a while, but have more recently discovered how much eucalyptus has relaxed me. I get more tired and cozy when I burn a eucalyptus candle at night, or if I add a few drops of eucalyptus oil into my humidifier at night before heading to bed to sleep. I also just put some eucalyptus in my shower and look forward to the beneficial effects it can have!
So what are the benefits of this plant? Eucalyptus can help with colds and respiratory illnesses but serving as a decongestant. It’s also been shown that eucalyptus has antibacterial and antimicrobial properties, which can fight bacterial and prevent tooth decay. Additionally, eucalyptus is an eco-friendly insect repellent. Also, eucalyptus has been researched to discover it helps stimulate the immune system, specifically oil from the plant. It’s been found to be helpful when combating arthritis, diabetes, fever, cold sores, wounds and burns, and a stuffy nose, among other things.
Do be wary of possible side effects; don’t take eucalyptus oil, such as from an essential oil bottle, orally since it is indeed poisonous. Consumption of the oil can result in diarrhea, upset stomach, nausea, and vomiting. That being said, breathing in eucalyptus should bring no harm to you, as well as if you use it topically, such as in a lotion or hand sanitizer. Further, eucalyptus leaves specifically are safe and can be used to make tea; they are a great source of antioxidants.
Overall, eucalyptus is relaxing for many and can lower blood pressure and reduce stress. This is why eucalyptus is commonly hung in the shower. The steam of the shower releases some of the oils and allows you to inhale them. Benefits of this include reduction in inflammation, boosting energy levels, and promote focus and concentration. Fresh eucalyptus can be bought at your local Trader Joe’s, and fresh bundles last 2-4 weeks in your shower (make sure to watch for any mold).
