Courage

August 7, 2017 in Be Positive

“Courage doesn’t always roar.  Sometimes courage is the quiet voice at the end of the day, saying, ‘I will try again tomorrow.'”

— Mary Anne Radmacher

Night Sky

Also, Brene Brown has done amazing work surrounding courage.  Dr. Brown defines the word courage and its history as:

The root of the word courage is cor—the Latin word for heart. In one of its earliest forms, the word courage had a very different definition than it does today. Courage originally meant “To speak one’s mind by telling all one’s heart.” Over time, this definition has changed, and, today, courage is more synonymous with being heroic.

We certainly need heroes, but I think we’ve lost touch with the idea that speaking honestly and openly about who we are, about what we’re feeling, and about our experiences (good and bad) is the definition of courage.

Heroics is often about putting our life on the line. Ordinary courage is about putting our vulnerability on the line. In today’s world, that’s pretty extraordinary.

How do you define courage?  Do you have an example of courage that you’d like to share?  We’d love to hear from you!

Two questions before we begin:

How do you bring happiness to yourself?

How do you spread happiness to others?

The 10 Keys

The 10 Keys Photo credit: www.actionforhappiness.org

These questions can be a little hard to answer, especially if you’ve never thought about it before!  Luckily, there is a cool website called Action for Happiness that focuses on happiness, why we should be happy, and why being happy should be important to us.  The organization’s vision “is a happier world, with fewer people suffering with mental health problems and more people feeling good, functioning well and helping others.”  The website gives you “action steps” to create a happier you and a happier society.

Also worth checking out are the “10 Keys to Happier Living.”  You can find information, resources, questions, and actions to apply the 10 Keys to your life. These 10 Keys have been proven to make people’s lives happier and more fulfilling.

Happy x 3

March 6, 2017 in Be Positive

Let’s try an exercise in happiness and gratitude for one week.  At the end of every day, reflect on three things that made you happy during the day.  They can be anything, like hearing from an old friend, crushing it on a test or in a sports game, cuddling with your pet, or an act of kindness that someone showed you.

Answer the following every day:

1.  Today’s first happy moment was……

2.  The second time I felt happy was when…

3. What was the last happiness surprise of your day?

Science proves this daily reflection works. In one study, the authors had a group of people list three good things that happened to them everyday for one week.  Even though the experiment only lasted for a week, people reported feeling happier and less sad at the one, three, and six month follow up periods.  This practice trains our brains to think positively.

Here we go! Share your happy moments x 3 for today in the comments section, and then get back to us in one week about how the rest of it went!

“You’re going to do so much.  But it’s not about what you do.  It’s about who you are.  And you?  You’re awesome.  You were made that way.  You were made from love, to be love, to spread love, and love is always louder.  Even if hate has a bullhorn, love is louder.  So let your life be loud!  Let it shout to the world: Things can be better!  It’s okay about all the mess-ups!”

Reducing Stress with Easy Yoga

August 24, 2016 in Educate Yourself

Anxiety is a huge mental stessor.  When we feel anxious, our body’s “fight or flight” response kicks in.  Fight or flight prepares us to struggle or escape. This response starts in your brain and branches into your nerves and bloodstream, which causes our heart rate, blood pressure, and breathing to speed up.  You can experience this response any time- whether it’s during a test you feel nervous about, when something frustrates you, or when you just feel stressed in general.

So, what can we do about it?  Yoga is recognized as a good stress-relieving practice that can reduce feelings of anxiety.  You don’t have to be a yoga master to reap the benefits of this. In fact, here is a cool infographic that will show you 7 really easy breathing exercises and yoga poses to help you reduce stress!

Try out the breathing and yoga exercises.  What did you like about them?  How did you feel after?  Let us know in the comments!  (and keep them in mind for the next time you feel stressed or anxious!)

Yesterday, tomorrow, and today

August 28, 2015 in Be Positive

“There are only two days in the year that nothing can be done.  One is called yesterday and the other is called tomorrow, so today is the right day to love, believe, do, and mostly, live.”
